The South Fish Creek Recreation Association is moving forward with the expansion of the Fish Creek Recreation Complex thanks to the Recreational Infrastructure Canada (RInC) program, a major job-creating investment from Canada’s Economic Action Plan.

“Our Government is investing in this expansion to create jobs and give more people the opportunity to enjoy the recreational activities offered at the Complex, while also taking advantage of the forthcoming artistic and cultural spaces,” said the Honourable Jason Kenney, Minister of Citizenship, Immigration & Multiculturalism and Member of Parliament for Calgary Southeast, on behalf of the Honourable Lynne Yelich, Minister of State for Western Economic Diversification.

Funding of $1,000,000 is provided through the Recreational Infrastructure Canada (RInC) program as part of Canada’s Economic Action Plan.

The expansion involves adding two arenas, ten change rooms and areas for recreational, social, artistic and cultural uses to the complex. As the existing facilities are being used to capacity, the additions will help meet the current and future recreational needs of the community. The expansion will also create immediate employment and contribute to the economic well-being of the surrounding community.

“The expansion of the South Fish Creek arenas from two arenas to four arenas has been a long-standing need for Calgary,” says Simone Mersereau, President of the South Fish Creek Recreation Association. “Thousands of hours of volunteer work and fundraising are represented in this project. The RInC funding is needed and greatly appreciated. Thank you on behalf of all of the communities of south Calgary.”

The Recreational Infrastructure Canada (RInC) program will invest $500 million in recreational facilities across Canada over a two-year period. It will provide a temporary economic stimulus that will help reduce the impacts of the global recession while renewing, upgrading and expanding recreational infrastructure in Canadian communities.

Letter to Diane Colley-Urquhart regarding golf course development

February 20, 2010 11:36 by Norm Rousseau

Good morning Diane;

I recently received an email from you in regards to this heated debate.  Although I don’t live in the Shawnee/Evergreen area, my parents do.  My father, mother and I have had many conversations concerning this subject.

From what I understand there has been some less than professional maneuvers by the group of opportunist entrepreneurs in their attempt to manipulate the City and the system to accommodate their land use changes to suite their development needs.  I also understand that most residents of Shawnee Slopes and Evergreen are opposed to this dramatic land use change, and that it contravenes the original land use purposes put in place by the Shaw family.

I agree with my parents that development of this golf course into 1100 homes would create residential traffic chaos and congestion.  Doesn’t Calgary have enough of these nightmares already?  Is it really necessary to create another one?  The area really doesn’t have the infrastructure to support this kind of traffic volume.

Once City Hall gives it’s stamp of approval to change the land use designation, every golf course and green space within the City will be up for grabs by redevelopers, and you can bet they will use this example as ammunition to support their agenda.

If these entrepreneurs are so determined to build 1100 homes, show them a spot well outside the city, or better yet, show them a map of Halifax!

Regards,

Janet

P.S.  I noticed that the Town Hall Meeting has been postponed due to developer delay – what exactly is developer delay?
