Attention:  Ms. Gloria Dingwall

I thought I would take a few minutes to let you know my opinion about the new “traffic calming” features that were installed a few months ago in Evergreen.

I have to admit that at first I was not particularly fond of these gigantic speed bumps.  In fact I may have accidentally muttered some unprintable words under my breath the first time that I drove my sports car over them and scraped the bottom of my carbon fiber frame.  Right at that moment I wondered why these brutal things had been installed.

Since then I have noticed that traffic has to slow down a little now as it moves through the playground zone just down the hill from my house.  I remember a few years ago when my son and his friends were almost hit by someone flying through that clearly marked area.  I also notice that the traffic that used to speed down Evergreen Street is also moving slower.

I have now learned how to angle my car over the speed bumps without scraping the bottom and although my commute now takes me about 22 seconds longer than before (I have 5 sets of them to go over) I am happy that people are now complying with the speed limit that they might not have been complying with before they were installed.  At the end of the day the safety of our children and people in our community is worth the extra 22 seconds and a scraped frame.  Besides, the car is so low you can’t see the scrapes under it anyway!

Sincerely,

Ryan Ockey

April 27, 2009 19:29 by Norm Rousseau

On Monday, September 22, 2008 the Calgary City Council approved the Shawnee / Evergreen Community Traffic Management Plan for implementation.  As part of the plan, community traffic management measures are scheduled for construction commencing on May 4, 2009 pending The City contractor’s schedule and weather permitting.

During the construction phase of these new traffic management measures, restrictions on local roadways may be required including:
* Speed limit reductions
* Temporary loss of on-street parking
* Lane closures or partial road closures
* Restricted access to driveways.  If a driveway is restricted, residents will be given at least 24 hours notice.

After several years on a wait list it's underway, "Traffic Calming." Hopefully the traffic calming will slow down those that believe they are on a drag strip or use Shawnee Drive as a road course. Surveying is currently in progress. This the the final plan for the Trafic Calming on Shawnee Drive, Evergreen Street and Evergreen Drive. Evergreen Drive SW – between Evergreen Crescent and Evergreen Plaza SW Two sets of Speed cushions are proposed for Evergreen Drive SW between Evergreen Crescent SW and Evergreen Plaza SW. These measures will be located north and south of the existing pathway crossing on Evergreen Drive which presently has curb extensions. The intent is to slow motorists on Evergreen Drive SW on the approach to the pathway crossing where speeding has been an issue.

Evergreen Drive SW - at the intersection of Evergreen Manor SW Two curb extensions are proposed for Evergreen Drive SW on the north side of the intersection of Evergreen Manor SW. These curb extensions will shorten the crossing distance for pedestrians crossing Evergreen Drive at the pathway and highlight the crossing location to motorists at this intersection.

Evergreen Drive SW – south of Evergreen Hill SW Speed cushions are proposed for Evergreen Drive SW south of Evergreen Hill SW. This measure will slow northbound motorists on Evergreen Drive on the approach to the playground zone and also keep motorist speed reasonable on the departure from the playground zone into the residential area where Evergreen Drive curves to the south.
