Re: "Golf course neighbours object to housing plan," April 3.
Current owners of the Shaw-Nee Slopes Golf Course claim the course should be rezoned for a massive residential development because it's aging and the business isn't viable. Many courses in this city are much older and they're making money. The previous Shaw-Nee owners turned down offers from at least two golf course developers. Experienced developers did not buy the golf course because they recognized the low probability of changing the land use from recreational to residential. Thirty years ago, the Shaw family made big money selling lots in the golf course community they created.
Many of the original residents are seniors who still live here.

Signs went up in the community on March 31, inviting the community to attend an open house regarding the “Shawnee Park Plan” on April 12, 13 and 14 (3:00 to 8:00 at the golf course). This is an event hosted by Geo Energy, the developer, to see plans for the residential development of Shaw-Nee Slopes Golf Course. Geo Energy also sent invitations via Canada Post as “unaddressed mail” on April 1 (copy attached).
We encourage you to attend and see what the developer has planned. We have heard that Geo Energy's plans now entail an even higher density development. We were originally led to believe their target was 1,100 homes but now understand that it has been increased to 1,600 homes.
Is this a done deal? No, not at all. Geo Energy has to get approval from the City to rezone the land before they can begin development. They are required by the City of Calgary to consult with the community, which is the purpose of the open house. Whether they take our views into consideration remains to be seen. However, concerns raised at the community information session on January 22, 2009 appear to have been ignored.
To date, they have not submitted completed application forms, but we expect that will happen next week. And when they do, we will fight it, as planned. Our position has not changed. There are many areas appropriate for development, but not the land currently designated as a golf course.
We encourage you to go to the open house and see what's planned. Then tell Geo Energy exactly what you think about their plans to replace mature green space with high density housing. Tell them how you feel about fighting horrendous traffic just to get in and out of your community. Tell them how this will affect your quality of life.
You live here. They don't. Your views count, so express them.

The Canadian Blood Services wants to ensure patient needs are met throughout this uncertain cold and flu season, which is why the organization asks blood donors to continue to give while they are feeling well.
Giving blood should remain a priority for all who are healthy. Blood donation is a safe process and Canadian Blood Services has hygiene and infection control measures in place to enhance the protection of donors, staff and volunteers when and where needed.
