Help your South Fish Creek Recreation Association with their expansion.

March 16, 2009 14:39 by Norm Rousseau

One way you can participate is through the Golf Tournament on June 22, 2009. Here are all the details http://www.sfcra.com/index.php  The South Fish Creek Complex is a unique and exciting project that brings together key community organizations in the development of a recreation, education, and library facility for the community. Located in the Shawnessy Town Centre, the complex primarily serves Calgarians residing south of Fish Creek Provincial Park.

The facility includes a Catholic senior high school, a public library, twin ice arenas, community gymnasium, public education space, and a full service YMCA. The Complex was completely operational by April 2002.

Having all of the various facilities "under one roof" allows one-stop shopping for all your recreation, education and library needs. It is a huge leap forward in bringing together agencies that serve the same community and have the same goals for community development.

The total project cost is $42.5 million, of which the City of Calgary contributed $25 Million. Building all the facilities together in one Complex saved approximately 10 percent or about $4 million, of what the cost would have been if each facility were to built separately.

The Alliance Partners involved in the operation of the South Fish Creek Complex are The City of Calgary, Calgary Public Library, South Fish Creek Recreation Association, Calgary Roman Catholic Separate School District No. 1, Calgary Board of Education, and YMCA Calgary. The average daily visitation to the Complex will be approximately 5,000 initially and is expected to increase to more than 6,000.

Bicycle Helmet Safety

March 1, 2009 17:04 by Norm Rousseau

Getting started

•Allow children to assist in choosing their own helmet– cyclists who choose their own helmet are more likely to wear them.
•Make a habit of wearing helmets early, even if young children are learning on a tricycle.
•One simple rule: no helmet, no cycling. Make the rule and stick to it consistently.
•Lead by example– always wear your own helmet!
•A helmet that has been in a crash must be replaced, even if it appears undamaged.
•Replace your helmet every five years even if it hasn’t been in a crash. UV rays will weaken the helmet over time.

Getting the right fit

•The helmet should rest level on the head, never tilted high or low over the forehead.
•The helmet should feel snug, but not too tight. It should not fall off when you shake your head from side to side while the straps are unfastened.
•Adjust the chin straps to form a “Y” below and slightly forward from the ears.
•Only one finger should be able to fit under the chin strap when it is fastened.
•Use the sizing pads included with the helmet to improve the comfort and fit.

Getting informed

•A brain injury is not like a broken bone - it may never fully heal.
•A brain injury can lead to permanent disability or death.
•The cost of a helmet is easily justified. Research demonstrates wearing a helmet can reduce the risk of brain injury by 85%.
•Statistics show that all cyclist fatalities in children under the age of 15 were unhelmeted.
•Remember: all cyclists’ crash eventually!
•Calgary paramedics are doing their part– every year the Calgary Paramedics Charity Society gives away 500 bicycle helmets to less fortunate children.

Every year Calgary paramedics respond to traumatic emergencies where    helmets have prevented a serious injury or saved a life.
