Golf course manager meets with SECA board

August 8, 2008 11:27 by Richard Arnold

It’s been nearly a year since we formed the Land Use Committee when we learned that the owners of ShawNee Slopes Golf Course were entertaining a serious offer to purchase. It’s the community’s hope that if the current owners sell the golf course, it is to someone who wishes to continue operating it as a golf course.  Residential development of such a large area scale will dramatically impact the quality of life for everyone who lives south of Fish Creek, not only those who live near the golf course. Anyone who has attempted to access Macleod Trail during the morning rush hour will agree that more development without adequate infrastructure is more than an inconvenience – it’s dangerous.

On June 17th, David Moote, General Manager of the ShawNee Slopes Golf Course, met with the Shawnee Evergreen Community Association’s (SECA) Board of Directors. He presented several conceptual drawings developed for the golf course owners reflecting different development options. They range from full residential development of the land to partial development with some golf course activity. Although it is interesting to see the drawings, the reality is that any new owners will have their own plans for the land.  The golf course owners have received several offers to purchase. None have yet been successful but the owners have a strong desire to sell the golf course in the near future. At that time, we will learn more about the new owners and their plans. It is not currently zoned for residential development and we hope to influence City Hall if and when they revisit that decision. It’s our job to demonstrate the impact that residential development will have on surrounding areas. We are gathering that research, and we are very pleased to have recruited a couple of new volunteers recently, but we could use more help. Call me if you are interested in getting involved. You’ll be glad you did.  Richard Arnold Chair, Land Use Committee Shawnee Evergreen Community Association 236-9350/ arnoldrm@shaw.ca

It seems to me that with a little more adventurous management the Golf course could be improved as a leisure facility for the wider community.

As this is only run as golf course it is dormant for half a year. Other courses make use of the snowy days to run cross country ski trails. Others have indoor activities (curling, squash courts, gym, pools etc,) and the golf club focuses on the club aspect rather than the golf.

I and many people that are not keen golfers but would love to have a country club centred in our community offering a wider range of facilities. Imagine a clubhouse with a gym, swimming pool, squash courts, tennis courts, a decent restaurant and bar. This could become a smart club for the people of Calgary and in particular for the south west.

I think we all agree that we dont want this to become yet another mass of houses and so, to preserve the tranquility the course needs to be profitable and one way to achieve this would be to diversify.

I think that there is a gap in the Calgary area for a reasonably priced private members club that would cater to year round activities and would love to see a facility similar to www.nirvanaspa.co.uk - sheer heaven after a day at work!
