Shaw-nee Slopes Golf Course sold?
At the time of writing this report (early October), there is much speculation about whether the Shaw-nee Slopes Golf Course (SNS) has been sold. At this time, the representative of the current owners of SNS has assured us that the property has NOT been sold. However, they are in active discussions with one or more potential purchasers. They have a deadline of October 31st to come to a definitive purchase/sale agreement so by the time you are reading this Newsletter it may well be sold! There has been much speculation and rumours about what the potential purchaser plans to do with the property. However, at this time they are just that – rumours! As soon as we hear specific plans, we will be lobbying with the purchaser to hold a general meeting to present their plans.
In order to be better prepared to deal with any development proposals, we have proactively established a “Project Development Committee”. Diane Colley-Urquhart attended our Annual General Meeting on September 26th (thank you Diane!) and supported the establishment of this committee. Sharon Masker who has joined us this year as a Director has volunteered to be the Chairperson. Carol McClary has been identified by Diane as the city-planning representative, David Jacobs has corporate properties and development expertise, Gerry Lang will handle public safety and security, Norm Rosseau will keep our web site up to date with developments, Marion McIntyre will handle communications, Peter Snell will be the Treasurer and I will be on the committee in my role as Association President. We are looking for SECA members who have expertise in the following areas who would like to volunteer to join the Committee: city planning, architecture and transportation. A volunteer to be Committee Secretary would also be helpful. If you are interested in volunteering, please contact me at 254-9685 or Sharon at 873-7725.
With the Highbury development at James McKevitt and Shawnee Gate, you may have noticed that the “Fairways” community sign has been removed. The developer (Perera Development Group) has agreed to erect an appropriate replacement sign in due course. It has been suggested that signs at both of the “entrances” to the Shawnee Slopes (i.e. at this corner and at Shawnee Drive) would be appropriate. It has also been suggested that the sign(s) read “Shawnee Estates” which is felt to be a more effective name than Shawnee Slopes (which is usually thought of as the golf course).
If you have any input on this name subject, please let me know.
